Before You Submit Your Resume – Read This First

Don’t rush! Take a few extra minutes to make sure your resume makes a great impression and highlights your experience clearly. Use this quick checklist to help you stand out.

Make a Great First Impression

Your resume’s look matters before anyone reads a word. Keep it clean and simple:

  • Use a format that’s easy to read

  • Keep fonts and styles consistent

  • Use bullet points instead of long paragraphs

  • Skip photos and fancy design

Highlight Your Experience

Hiring teams look for proof you have the right skills. Show it clearly:

  • Start each bullet with a past-tense verb

  • Focus on what you achieved or improved

  • Be honest — don’t exaggerate or take credit for team work

  • Avoid using “I,” “me,” or words like “amazing”

  • Only include volunteer work or school projects if relevant

  • Don’t repeat the same duties for different jobs

Double-Check Everything

A resume with mistakes shows a lack of attention. That’s a red flag.

  • Carefully proofread — don’t rely on spellcheck

  • Use one phone number and one email

  • Make sure everything is clear and consistent

Handle Red Flags Honestly

Some things raise concerns: job hopping, short jobs, gaps, or career changes.
If these apply to you:

  • Add a short explanation on your resume (not just in a cover letter)

  • Be honest — don’t try to hide anything

A polished, clear resume gives you the best shot at getting the interview. Take the time — it’s worth it.

Conduct Research on the Company and Job Opportunity

Success in a job interview starts with a solid foundation of knowledge on your part. You should understand the company and the requirements of the job. The more research you conduct, the more you’ll understand the employer, and the better you’ll be able to answer interview questions (as well as ask insightful questions). Read all the information on our website and other information we have provided. Learn more about our culture here on our website.

Review Common Interview Questions and Prepare Your Responses

Another key to interview success is preparing responses to expected interview questions. Your goal is to try to determine what you’ll be asked and to compose thoughtful answers that focus on specific examples and accomplishments. A good tool for remembering your responses is to put them into a story form that you can tell in the interview. You don’t need to memorize responses if you develop talking points. There are excellent tools available to help you with interview questions and responses.

For example, consider using the STAR Interviewing Technique when responding to questions:

S – State the SITUATION you were in. Describe the background; set the stage.
T – Describe the TASK or TARGET objective. Explain what was required, when, where, who, etc.
A – Explain the ACTION you took. Describe what you did, the skills you used, etc.
R – Describe the RESULT. Explain what happened, what was the result, etc.

Interview Prep: Key Tips to Stand Out

Dress for Success

Wear clean, well-fitting, professional clothes that match the company culture. Less is more—keep jewelry and accessories simple. Avoid eating or smoking right before, and freshen your breath.

Arrive Early & Be Prepared

Aim to arrive 15 minutes early. Bring:

  • Extra copies of your resume

  • A list of references

  • A portfolio or samples (if relevant)

  • Pens and paper
Turn off your phone and ditch the gum.

Make a Strong First Impression

Stay calm and focused. Don’t check your phone or email before the interview. Think through how you’ll greet people and communicate your value. Show genuine passion for the job.

Be Clear, Confident & Honest

  • Be authentic and upbeat

  • Keep answers focused and concise

  • Use examples to show your strengths

  • Prepare for common questions

  • Never badmouth previous employers

Ask Great Questions

Prepare thoughtful questions ahead of time. Practice your responses so you’re ready for anything—even unexpected questions.

Watch Your Body Language

Positive: Smile, make eye contact, sit tall, and nod while listening.
Avoid: Fidgeting, looking away, mumbling, touching your face, or chewing gum.
Tip: Try a “power pose” in private before the interview to boost confidence (check out Amy Cuddy’s TED Talk).

Sell Yourself

You’re not just answering questions—you’re showing how you’re the best fit. Highlight your soft skills, team fit, and enthusiasm. End with a brief, confident recap.

Follow Up

Before leaving, thank the interviewer and give a short closing statement about your interest and fit.
Then, send a thank-you email the same day. Save company numbers so you don’t miss follow-up calls.

Preparation = Confidence = Success
Make a great impression and close strong. You’ve got this!

A common problem in the typical job search is that a great candidate does not get all the credit they deserve; because, their resume does not completely reflect their capabilities, strengths, prior experience, etc. The reason this is so important is because in most cases, a recruiter must SHOW that you have all the required skills and experience, or the operations manager will never get to see your resume.
First, here’s an example of what NOT to do:

Bad Resume Example…

Bad Resume Example

Notice the single bullet. Unfortunately, this is all too common. When it comes to resumes…
You don’t get credit for anything that is NOT on your resume!

Now, let’s look at what makes a great driver resume.

There is One Big Thing that will help a highly qualified driver candidate – a stronger resume!!

A Driver with a winning resume has a detailed list of skills and experience for each job position they’ve had. Here’s what you can do to increase your odds of an interview and an offer. Consider this list of different types of duties and responsibilities. How many of these are part of your daily work? Well, you won’t get credit for the experience if it’s not listed on your resume.

You should consider adding and editing to personalize any of the following duties and responsibilities to better illustrate what you have done. Think about it. The more your resume looks like the job description, the more you look like the perfect candidate!

Locate the following bullet resource for examples of what to include on your resume.
